Substance abuse in America today is a problem that shatters millions of families, and more often than you might think, the drug at the center of so much destruction happens to be perfectly legal.
Painkillers. Alcohol. "Medical" marijuana. All three have led families to the life-saving substance abuse programs at Enchantment Workshops.
Substance abuse includes alcohol abuse and all kinds of drug abuse - it is an umbrella term that serves an important purpose: reminding us that ALL addictions have much in common. The pain of an alcoholic is almost identical to that of a heroin user. Sometimes, addicts try to separate themselves from "those people" who have a more-serious problem. "I only drink, I've never smoked a joint in my life," an alcoholic might say, justifying his refusal to seek substance abuse treatment. Another addict might say he or she doesn't really have a drug problem because they've never used a syringe.
Those who turn to drugs or alcohol often do so because of other mental or emotional issues that are dragging them down. Once upon a time, treatment paid little attention to these problems, even though they might have caused the addiction in the first place.
That's the thing with addiction - it often happens to those who feel an emotional or spiritual emptiness inside. True happiness, and successful sobriety, comes from conquering these issues through counseling and effective treatment.
